Client Spotlight – Chelsea’s Critter Care LLC!

Our next Client Spotlight is shining on Chelsea Hall and her team at Chelsea’s Critter Care LLC. Based in Montgomery Village, MD – Chelsea is the definition of an entrepreneur.  She started her business when she was only 12 years old and hasn’t looked back since! Chelsea’s Critter Care now includes a team of experienced dog walkers and pet sitters who are providing phenomenal care to the pets in the Clarksburg, Germantown, Gaithersburg and Rockville area! What caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
At twelve years old, I asked my mom for a dog of my own- a request that was swiftly denied. I wanted to make it a point to prove that I was responsible enough for dog ownership and began to walk my neighbor’s dog, Hey Dude (yes, that was really his name!). Word spread quickly and before I knew it, I was walking several neighborhood dogs! My business really started booming after I earned my driver’s license and expanded my territory. I am fortunate that this has been my primary career focus throughout my entire life. I guess I have my strict mother to thank for my start!

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
I truly enjoy being able to put my clients’ minds at ease while they are away from their beloved fur babies. It takes A LOT of trust to place everything valuable in someone else’s hands and for me to be deemed worthy of that trust means everything.

What is the most challenging?
The most challenging part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking service is the need to be available at all times. I have a hard time putting my phone away due to the possibility of an emergency or the need to schedule a visit at the last moment. Hiring a strong team of pet lovers has eased some of this, but it is still my responsibility to schedule and delegate at all hours of the day.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to be at a point where I can take a full leadership role in my company. At this time, I have a daily dog walking schedule of my own on top of the necessary billing, scheduling, and emailing that needs to be done to keep business running smoothly. I currently have 11 wonderful employees, but am expanding my team in hopes of limiting my own need to do visits and overnight stays.

What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
We are streamlined, organized and better than ever. Prior to TTP, my client info sheets were handwritten and stored in a binder that was falling apart (keep in mind I did begin when I was only twelve!) I was the only one who had access to the important client info sheets, which became inconvenient as I expanded and hired more employees. On top of that, we encountered frequent glitches in the shared calendar that was previously used for scheduling. I wanted a way to make information readily available to all of my team members, and TTP was the perfect solution. Thank you for being the catalyst we needed to reach next level of service that always felt just out of our grasp!

chris-herathWhat caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
While out camping with my wife, a coonhound who was about 30 lbs underweight wandered up to our camp site. After doing our due diligence in trying to find the owner, we determined he was just left out there. At the time, we already had three cats and weren’t looking to get a dog but we instantly fell in love with Coleman. It became clear very quickly that our work and travel schedule made it necessary for us to hire a pet sitter to take care of our dog. When we went looking for a pet sitter, we struggled finding a legitimate business in our area with someone who was available full time for pet care. We ended up just having neighbors and family take care of Coleman, but it was such an inconvenience. I was constantly saying, “I can’t believe we can’t find a pet sitting business in the area. I should start one.” At the time, I was working for my own financial company but was not quite feeling fulfilled by the career I was in. I decided to have a friend of mine help me put up a website for pet sitting to see what would happen. Within about 3 months I was spending all my time on the pet business and was loving it. This gave me the confidence to devote all my attention to making this dream a reality. The rest they say is history!

dog1What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
My fulfillment comes from helping people (and of course their pets). I truly believe that a business which helps a large amount of people solve a problem will always be a success. I feel our clients truly appreciate what we do for their pets. Every day I get a text message or a phone call just saying thank you. I have one particular client who had never traveled to see her grandson because she had a diabetic cat and was afraid to travel. Knowing we were the reason she had the peace of mind to finally be able to travel makes this all worth it!

The most challenging aspect is time management when we are super busy! Our typical visit is 30 minutes, and when you have a full day those visits really add up. It’s crucial to get an early start and always be aware of how much progress you have made on your schedule for the day.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
The future of Atlantic Pet Sitting excites me! Our goal obviously is to be helping even more people than we are now. This would include bringing on more staff and giving others the opportunity to be fulfilled through working as a pet sitter. It’s a really exciting time to be in the pet business as people care for their pets more now than ever before. We are always trying to think outside of the box on ways we can serve our clients to the highest level, and we are always collecting feedback from our clients on where they would like to see us expand.

dog2What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
Time to Pet has made a night and day difference in our business. Before Time to Pet I was running everything through separate programs. I had my revenue and client list in Google Docs, I was putting all our appointments on iCal, and I was creating my own invoices. It was so disorganized and nothing was linked. Time to Pet has brought everything to one seamless system. When I enter a client and schedule a round of visits the invoice and schedule is automatically created for me. I don’t worry about adding staff or clients now because I know with a few keystrokes everything will be setup with Time to Pet. The reporting side of things in Time to Pet has also changed the way we do business. I can look at our weekly, monthly, and yearly data to see where emerging opportunities are within our business.

jessica-cobbWhat caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
I’ve always wanted to do something involving animals. My opportunity came when we had recently moved to a new state. My husband and I were both working full time jobs and one of our dogs still had to be crated when we weren’t home. Before we moved, my Dad would come over every afternoon and let our dogs out but we didn’t have that anymore and I felt guilty about our youngest dog being cooped up for so long. I searched in our area for someone who offered pet sitting and there was no one in the area that did it professionally or even came up in a Google search! I hated my job at the time, saw the opportunity to create a pet sitting business in an area where they desperately needed one….and it all fell into place!

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
Of course the animals are a big part of why anyone gets into this business and there are so many rewarding parts to it. However, I’ve found that the most satisfying part of what we do is too help assist the owners. I’ve had numerous clients with health issues that have started our services because they could no longer walk or care for their pet as they once did and our services mean everything to them because they are able to meet their pets needs with our assistance. Or clients who haven’t been able to go on a vacation for years because they haven’t felt comfortable enough to leave their pets and are now able to get away, relax and know their pets are safe and happy in our care. These make the biggest impact and remind me that what we’re providing is SO much more than just walking dogs and feeding animals.

What is the most challenging?
The most challenging part of this business is working around X amount of client’s schedules and still trying to find time for a life. One person’s life is very busy and hectic these days, let alone managing upwards of 100 or more changing schedules and plans! Sometimes it is hard to find balance between work and your personal life because this is a very personal business and you don’t want to let anyone down.

dog1Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In 5 years, I would love to see our pet sitting service area expand to the surrounding areas that don’t have many options in the way of professional in home sitters. Beyond that though, I would love to open a boarding facility/dog daycare where dogs could interact and play with one another. Another part of this facility would be a canine activity center. It would be complete with dock diving, lure coursing and other activities that owners and their dogs could participate in as well as the option to have boarding dogs participate in these exercises while staying with us.

What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
Oh gosh, how have I lived WITHOUT TTP for so long!? It has made everything so much simpler! It has freed up a lot of time in regards to the administrative side of things and eliminated a lot of separate processes that I had to do beforehand. It has also added a whole other level of professionalism to my business and I constantly get comments and compliments about how impressed they are with the system, how easy it is to use and how great it looks! I truly don’t know how I managed before using the TTP software!

lisa-mccabeWhat caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
I decided to set up my pet care business as I was working within the property industry and although I had an excellent salary and really good job, I was thoroughly miserable and was becoming very jealous of my own dog going out on adventures each day. So, I did all my research and went for it. I wanted to be a business though, here in the UK, the pet care industry is seen as more of a hobby, so I’m trying to change that one dog at a time through Stardust.

angusWhat is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
I love being able to make a difference not only to the lives of the dogs we look after but also to their families. We get so many lovely stories of dogs behaving better or being more outgoing as a result of being with us. There’s also nothing better than a slobbery mud filled dog cuddle!

What is the most challenging?
The challenges we face are really in terms of attitudes towards the industry. Most people don’t fully understand it and have a romantic idea that we just walk fluffy cute dogs on leads in a lovely park but there’s a whole back end business network involved too. Also increasing our prices is always a bit of a challenge as people do not realize the overheads involved and see paying £10 for an hours dog walk as quite expensive, although we know we are worth at least double that! I’d really like to see some change in UK legislation for our industry.

In 5 years, we hope to dominate the UK pet care market, with franchises throughout the country. We also hope to be well established within the U.S and have a range of Stardust products on sale.

What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
TTP is exactly what I had been looking for, it’s now so easy to make and manage our bookings as well as provide feedback to our customers. It’s a one stop shop for us which saves so much time and has reduced my workload by 50%!

image2What caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
A few years ago, while attending grad school for clinical social work (located in my home town), a few of my childhood friend’s parents told me I had to pet sit their dogs to which I happily obliged. Eventually, a friend said, “Hey, you should make this a business” to which I replied, “Okay, why not!”

David’s Pet Services (DPS) was born. All it took was a business card for many to think of me as “the real deal,” something I found quite humorous. Alas, word got out and within no time I transitioned from a busy pet sitter to a dog walking and pet sitting business owner.

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
For me, the greatest gift is connecting with my staff in a way that promotes healthy boundaries and a fun work environment. As a teenager and young adult, I remember witnessing bosses who overcompensated for their ineffectiveness in ways that, among other things, negatively impacted relationships. I’ve always wanted to be a different type of leader; one that pays close attention to the well being of their employees.

image3What is the most challenging?
Puppies. Yes, the most challenging thing for me is … pulling away from the puppies. Oftentimes I want to complete the dog walks and pet sits myself because I love to exercise, play with, and train doggies. I also love shmushing their little faces (I mean come on, who doesn’t love that?).

However, when I take myself away from business managing and marketing, invoices aren’t sent, growth stagnates, etc. I’m like a soon-to-be-retired football player who’s too stubborn to move on from player to coach.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In the next five years, I hope to achieve two goals. First, to be the company which sets the highest standard in pet sitting and dog walking, in terms of effective dog training, customer-friendly policies, and advanced safety procedures. Second, I aim to expand my service area, which is currently a handful of towns surrounding my main hub of West Hartford, Connecticut.

Every. Single. Thing. I’ll spotlight one example (of so, so many). No longer are the days where throwing my computer through a window sounds more appealing than going through the grueling process of creating invoices on Microsoft Word.Now with TTP, I can sit back and relax knowing that once a client schedules their own services, it’s automatically invoiced too. I no longer have the urge to hurl my PC from my office onto the lawn. Thanks, TTP!

It was the perfect storm. Similar to many, I was tired of corporate politics and wanted to be independent. Next, I live in rural Minnesota and our area didn’t have any options for professional, in-home pet care. I had a relative who took amazing care of my pets/home when I traveled, but wondered what others in our area did? Last, I don’t sit still very well, so an ‘active’ career was very appealing. When I looked at the big picture, all those things combined screamed Professional Pet Sitter at me. And…..obviously, I love animals and have always felt a special bond with them. Professional Pet Sitting was the perfect solution!

The gratitude. Each and every day I receive genuine thank-you’s from my clients. Having my work efforts acknowledged and appreciated means the world to me. My corporate experience didn’t provide that.

What is the most challenging?
Saying No. Sometimes there simply isn’t any more space in the schedule and I have to turn client requests down. I hate thinking about them having to struggle to find alternate, QUALITY care.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I would like to grow to the point where our company requires a small, close-knit team (5 or so staff members) to serve our town and surrounding communities. When people think about pet professionals, I want our company name to be the first that pops into their mind.

Overall, we are super happy with the transition to TTP! My staff loves it, I love it, and most importantly, clients love it. TTP’s support staff has ALWAYS been prompt at answering my questions when I first got started. I was (still am!) impressed with their responsiveness. I am also quite pleased with their efforts to continually improve their software. I had a few “wish list” items for them and I have seen a few of those rolled out with their updates. Thank you TTP!

I’ve always wanted to work with animals but I wasn’t sure in what capacity. After working in corporate healthcare for over 20 years, I decided to take a break. I decided to start my own Pet Sitting business. And 6 years later here I am! I have never looked back & have zero regrets!

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
Being able to bring a peace of mind to my fur clients’ humans. They treat me as if I am part of their family! Also just taking care of the pets, I have a lot of senior pets and some need very special care. I’m happy I can help make them feel loved and comfortable!

Lots!! Keeping track of scheduling and last minute changes/requests/cancellations!
Also taking care of dogs who are super timid. It takes lots of time and patience, which I love! They eventually learn to trust me and that makes me feel great!  Other people’s dogs, (non clients) in general, who let them roam off leash, or just don’t care if their dog charges at us.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In five years I hope to be able to employ a few more good folks to help walk/take care of pets. I have two of the best walkers/caretakers I could ever have hoped for! And I’m hoping in 5 years to be able to slow my pace a bit for more traveling!

TTP has been a great addition to my business! It’s made keeping track of scheduling between myself and my two employees so easy & organized.  I love being able to keep track of payments, and being able to generate reports to help with accounting and administrative work!  People love that they get notices in their email after the visit is completed and they love being able to pay online!! Which is great for me too! A lot of time saved for me from “chasing down” payments!

marilynWhat caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
I was frustrated working with a vet and would see them leaving the animals alone all weekend in a cage and someone would just come to walk them and feed them, no time to play or interact. The pets would get sick and the owners at the end had a sick, sad pet. I figured I could do better by having them in their environment and less risk of them getting sick.

I see my clients and their pets happy to come to a home environment and being able to interact with the pets. I can send pics to the clients to show them how well their pets are doing too!

What is the most challenging?
Having pet sitters that are not license or insured.

Given me the freedom of going paperless and tracking my workers to make sure the time the clients are paying for is being fully delivered.

What caused you to get into pet sitting/dog walking?
hold-my-leash3Company layoff and no work available. My plan back then was to just keep busy so I started volunteering at a local shelter and just fell in love with being with the animals. It was the start of great things from there. I went to school for dog training, worked with a few dog rescues and just started using my training skills to help several fosters dogs that I had taken in. I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go but after having a few clients under my belt and I just love walking each day with them so my heart led me into this business.

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
Being my own boss. I love having full control and growing this business my way.

What is the most challenging?hold-my-leash1
Most challenging with owning your business is finding a balance between work and home life. I feel fortunate that my business is so busy and there is plenty of work but I find it a challenge to slow down sometimes. This has always been my biggest challenge – I guess you can say I love what I do too much.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I hope to branch out into more towns and just keep growing. I would love to add more services for our clients. We also hope to one day have our own boarding facility.

What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?

I had messages coming in via text, email, voicemail. It just got out of control and I noticed that I just could not relax (always thinking we forgot a client). Once I starting using TTP, my business skyrocketed. It was a total game changer for us. My phone was quiet and I could finally focus and do everything I needed to in one app. Clients love the flexibility of just going on and scheduling their visits and also paying. Honestly could not imagine doing things any other way. TTP has the best customer support and is user friendly for all my clients and my staff I have true peace of mind that walks are completed and invoices paid.

Animals are my life! I started pet sitting for friends at first. Just seeing how excited the pets got when I arrived made me want to do more pet care so I went to work part time for a pet sitting company which I ended up working full time for. I then started my own business with the blessing of my boss and love every minute of it.

What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting business?
The most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business is meeting and taking care of so many different breeds of pets. I love what I do and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What is the most challenging?
The most challenging part of owning my own business is the bookkeeping part of it. Not knowing much about taxes and keeping up with all the records is a little challenging.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
Where do I begin. Time To Pet has made my life so much easier when it comes to scheduling, adding new clients and receiving credit card payments. The saving of all the emails that are sent to the clients is great. Having questions answered right away from support and not having to wait 24 hrs or longer is not only amazing; it is also time saving. I can’t imagine using any other software!
